District heating for better energy economy and environment
A district heating (DH) system supplies buildings with centrally generated heat. Hot DH water is generated
in a combined heat and power (CHP) plant and (or)
in a heat-only boiler (HOB) and transferred to the customers through a thermally insulated hot-water distribution network.
Centralised heat production enables the use of the most economical and environmentally benign fuel.
In addition, different sources of waste heat can be utilised.
Compared to embedded (distributed) heat production, a centralised heating system causes less pollution. Instead of coming from a large number of stacks, the flue gases exit into the atmosphere from only a few heat production plants, making exhaust gas cleaning and air-pollution control easier and more efficient.
