Project Description
The Pöyry Energy business group provided support to British Energy in preparing the safety case for the proposed AGR Dry Fuel Store in the areas of radiological protection assessment and fault analysis studies. The specific areas covered by Pöyry Energy Group were:
- Decommissioning
- Radiological Protection
- Criticality Control
- Active Waste Treatment Systems
- Fault Analysis including Thermal and Radiological Analyses
- Essential Systems
- Control and Instrumentation
- Safety Role of the Operator
Particular Services
The Pöyry Energy business group undertook the following analyses:
- For the radiological protection assessment design and safety study information was evaluated for suitability and completeness. Additional shielding calculations were carried out when it was judged that this would be necessary - improvements to the layout were also suggested as a result of this work.
- An estimate of the doses to operators was made on the basis of shielding calculations and the proposed operating sequence of the store.
- The amount of activity released from the plant was evaluated using experimental data on fuel behaviour during wet strage and transport.
- The resulting airborne releases and discharges to the marine environment were calculated together with the dose to individual members of the public. This was done for three types of notional site.
In addition the Pöyry Energy business group also performed fault analysis studies for the proposed AGR Dry Fuel Store including the derivation of the Fault Schedules and their development into potential Fault Sequences.
The Pöyry Energy business group carried out both the radiological and probabilistic assessment of these sequences to ensure their compliance with the safety design criteria. Where necessary changes to the design/procedures were suggested.
EEUK assisted in the preparation of the chapters of a generic (non site specific) Pre-Construction Safety Report concerning radiological protection and fault analysis. These chapters were written in accordance with British Energy standards.
The role of the Pöyry Energy business group was to highlight work required, in addition to that presented in the generic PCSR; ensure the work was undertaken, either internally or externally to Nuclear Electric, and finally to produce the required sections of the PCSR together with Supporting Reports, such that a satisfactory safety case was provided, in accordance with Nuclear Electric's requirements that could ultimately be presented to the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate. |
