Project Description

The Pöyry Energy business group provided specialist services to Safety Department, British Nuclear Fuels plc (BNFL), assisting in the preparation of safety cases and safety documentation supporting the Waste Monitoring and Compaction (WAMAC) Facility, Sellafield. This facility is a plant for the compaction of low level solid waste, and the project includes transfer of the product to Drigg and its encapsulation there prior to storage.

Particular Services

Working in liaison with the client, the Pöyry Energy business group has undertaken the production of the Preliminary Safety Report and the Pre-Commencement Safety Report

A wide spectrum of activities has been undertaken to date in preparation and in support of the above documents:

  • Recommendations to the client on the scope, format and content of safety documentation for the plant, as well as the actual preparation of the documentation.
  • Hazard identification and evaluation of proposed designs and their adequacy with regard to defined safety criteria, using such techniques as HAZOPS, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), fault/event tree analysis and consequence assessment.
  • Specification of research and development requirements to allow safety cases to be developed and validated.
  • Consideration of hazards due to external events, e.g. assessments of hazards due to aircraft crashes, seismic events, extreme weather and missile impacts.
  • Presentation of safety documentation to BNFL committees, principally design committees and safety working parties.
  • Attendance at first and second level Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOPS). The Pöyry Energy business group staff have also performed duties as HAZOPS secretaries.
