Waste Management
In radioactive waste management, the Pöyry Energy business group has gained considerable experience of both strategy development and implementation. Work has been carried out in the following subject areas:
- Waste Inventories and Waste Characterisation
- Waste Storage and Retrieval
- Treatment and Encapsulation of Waste
- Waste Packaging, Handling and Transport
- Disposal of Wastes
Waste Treatment Plant
The Pöyry Energy business group's experience on Waste Treatment Plant comprises design, through to commissioning and safety case preparation.
Services provided include also specialised analysis, such as heat transfer, fracture mechanics, probabilistic safety analysis, radiation shielding and environmental impact.
Waste Disposal Sites
Assignments have involved low, intermediate and high level wastes and have ranged from initial feasibility studies (technical and economic) through conceptual design and engineering to radiological safety assessment and safety case preparation.
The experience gained enables the Pöyry Energy business group to provide waste management consultancy not only for radioactive materials but for a wide variety of chemical waste.
Waste Storage Plant
Extensive multinational experience has been gained by the Pöyry Energy business group in concept design, detailed design and safety case support of Waste Storage Plant. Specialised analysis of ventilation systems for such plant has also been provided.
Waste Transport
The Pöyry Energy business group has performed several transport safety studies, notably on thermal effects during transport. Complete transport system radiological assessments have been conducted. These included detailed radiation shielding calculations for conditioned low, intermediate and high level waste. Shielding, stress and thermal analysis of fuel transport flasks are carried out using the most current computer codes.
Waste Disposal Sites
Operating nuclear power plants and other facilities of the nuclear fuel cycle are the greatest producers of radioactive waste. Safe disposal of such by-products must be ensured. The Pöyry Energy business group has been involved in several challenging assignments in this field, and has contributed to the resolution of this problem in the United Kingdom, Switzerland and elsewhere, in the form of general studies, conceptual engineering and safety assessment of waste repositories. This work has been focused on all types of waste, namely the high, intermediate and low level wastes.
Furthermore, the categorisation of nuclear wastes with respect to their radiological and chemical hazards, and the setting of design and handling requirements for their conditioning represent other areas where the Pöyry Energy business group has proven its skills under various contracts to Belgian, British, German and Swiss organisations.
